back in june we closed on our offset home. it has a gas fireplace that is ventless. We had the utility company come out for our gas h2o heater and since the representative was at that place, nosotros asked him how to use the fireplace. DH & i only take experience with woodburning fireplaces. anyhoo, he showed usa and pointed out that the logs needed to exist cleaned equally well as the rocks sitting below them. our logs happened to exist cracked, but he said all nosotros needed to do was reattach them with a bolt. i cleaned the logs and rocks and DH bolted the logs together.

concluding night was cold enough where we could utilize the fireplace, so DH lit the pilot light and fired information technology up for a about 30 seconds when our smoke alert went off. in that location wasn't any smoke, nor did we smell any, so what would prepare information technology off? i thought at first that it was the carbon monoxide alarm, but that was silent every bit could be.

has this happened to anyone? can anyone clue u.s. in? we'd really similar to apply our fireplace without the alarms going off

likewise, nosotros're exploring the idea of replacing the logs. tin nosotros supersede just the logs or do we accept to supplant the unabridged insert assembly? forgive me, we're newbies with the gas fireplace.

Oh, there was smoke- you just couldn't run into information technology or odour it.
The fire from the gas was probably burning off residual. Just dirt and dusk that had accumulated inside the firebox. A couple of hrs of continuous burning should take care of the problem.

Read this:

And then you'll sympathise why you don't accept to see it (smoke) for the alert to go off.

It might. Just I wouldn't exhaust the energy. If the detector goes off over again- but disconnect it for a couple of hrs.

If information technology's new and was never used the possibility exists that paint or other things that may crusade fumes similar a rust preventive are burning off/curing. I'm non too familial with gas appliances but that is case with coal fired units.

Suggest you open the windows up and permit it run for almost an hour bold its new.

Nosotros've had the same trouble for years, then we simply stopped using the fireplace. Today, we are putting a bag over our alert(new fire and Co) and are going to let information technology burn in hopes information technology burns off annihilation setting off the alarm. I'll report back later.

Post I really like my direct vent heater; no products of combustion enter the room.

Please get a cocky-contained bombardment powered carbon monoxide detector, preferably i with a digital brandish and capable of detecting and displaying levels as depression every bit 5 ppm (most detectors, even Nest Protect, will display 0ppm until CO levels exceed 30ppm or so!)

Special low level CO monitors start at effectually $100.

I wouldn't cover the CO alert, especially when using a ventless fireplace. Is the unit of measurement newer than 1980, that is, new enough that includes has an Oxygen Depletion System (ODS)?

The business firm was built in 2000. And so far, it is working fine. I am going to get a stand alone CO detector. I will turn the fireplace on in the morning without covering the detector to encounter if it is working properly. Thank you.
